The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, commented on the lost lawsuit with Pfizer, expressing his confidence that Romania can obtain medicines in exchange for the sum of 600 million euros owed for the COVID-19 vaccines.
In an interview on Antena 3, he emphasized that the Romanian state will have to pay the amount anyway, having two options: to pay and destroy the vaccines or to negotiate to bring in necessary medicines. Rogobete mentioned that Romania does not have the capacity to store the 39 million doses, and approximately 3.5 million doses have already been destroyed due to expiration.
He explained that Romania had five days to refuse the contract but chose not to communicate anything, which led to its automatic activation. The minister emphasized that this was not the last possible contract with Pfizer and criticized the previous decision of other officials who did not want to sign the contract due to the large quantities of available vaccines.
