Former Romanian international Gheorghe Hagi paid tribute to legendary Italian defender Franco Baresi, who passed away at the age of 66. Hagi wrote on his official Facebook page that he had the pleasure of playing against Baresi, describing him as a great champion and a legend of world football. The two had memorable duels both at the national team level and in the Italian championship, where Hagi played for Brescia, and Baresi was the captain of AC Milan.

Baresi won the 1989 European Champions Cup final against Steaua Bucharest, wearing the captain's armband. Throughout his career, Baresi was appreciated by Hagi, who was considered a difficult opponent. Baresi, one of the greatest defenders in football history, won six Italian championship titles and three European Champions Cups, as well as a world title with the Italian national team in 1982. The news of his passing was announced by AC Milan, the club where Baresi played his entire career and where he was honorary vice president.
