Sandro Mazzola, an Inter Milan legend, has died at the age of 83. The former Italy striker won two European Cups.

Sandro Mazzola, an Inter Milan legend and former Italy striker, has died at the age of 83, the Italian club announced on Saturday. Mazzola spent his entire 17-year career at Inter, scoring 158 goals in 565 matches.

The former footballer helped the club win four Serie A titles and two European Cups. In the 1964 final, Inter defeated Real Madrid 3-1, with Mazzola scoring twice. A year later, the Milan side defended its continental trophy.

Mazzola made his senior debut at the age of 18, in a match Inter lost 9-1 to Juventus. He scored the Milan side’s only goal, from the penalty spot, in a game replayed after a result previously decided in Inter’s favor was annulled.

At international level, Mazzola was part of the Italy team that won the 1968 European Championship and reached the 1970 World Cup final. His father, Valentino Mazzola, died in the Superga air disaster in 1949.

Sandro Mazzola retired in 1977 and subsequently held sporting director positions at Inter and Torino. The Milan club described him as “the history of Inter” and one of the greatest footballers in history.
