A 30-year-old foreign national was detained on Friday by Bucharest police, suspected of sexual assault, battery or other acts of violence, and disturbing public order and peace. The incident took place on the evening of September 16, at around 10 p.m., on a street in Bucharest’s Sector 2.
According to investigators, the man allegedly touched a 25-year-old woman in an intimate area and, after she confronted him, allegedly struck her in the face. Several people nearby reportedly intervened to support the victim and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived.
The incident was reported to Police Station 8, and the case was subsequently taken over by the Sector 2 Criminal Investigations Service. Following their checks, police identified the suspect and brought him in for questioning.
According to information obtained from sources, the man is from Gambia, works as a delivery driver, and has a residence permit in Romania. He had reportedly not previously been investigated for offenses committed in the country.
After the evidence was gathered, the suspect was detained for 24 hours and is expected to be brought before magistrates based on the investigators’ proposal. The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Sector 2 District Court. Mentioning the suspect does not amount to a finding of guilt, which will be determined by the court.
