In rural areas of Romania, the number of ATMs is decreasing and people in many localities have to keep their cash at home. For example, in the village of Șimnicu de Sus, people have to travel 15 km to the nearest ATM. NBR statistics show that there are only 1,077 ATMs in rural areas, and the high costs for banks contribute to this situation. Since 2015, the total number of ATMs in the country has dropped from 11,400 to more than 10,200.
