Eurovision 2026, the most important annual pop culture event in Europe, is caught in a social conflict related to Israel's military operations in the Middle East. Protests are planned in Vienna, where the competition will take place, and the police have intensified security measures. The organizers are trying to maintain a politically neutral event, after five countries announced that they would boycott the competition if Israel participates. Martin Green, the director of Eurovision, stated that discussions with the involved countries are ongoing, but the decision is theirs to make. Israel's participation is contested due to the war in Gaza, triggered by an attack from Hamas. The European Broadcasting Union emphasized that Eurovision is a non-political event, but will allow Israel's participation as long as it respects the rules. Israel has advanced to the semifinals and will compete in the final on May 16.
