An explosion caused by an electric scooter left on charge occurred on Monday morning in an apartment in Bucharest, seriously injuring the owner, who suffered burns while trying to extinguish the fire. The incident, which took place around 7:30 AM, was so powerful that it shattered the windows of the residence and ripped the bedroom door off its hinges. Residents of the building were awakened by the blast of the explosion and the huge flames, and some self-evacuated due to the dense smoke that spread rapidly.
Firefighters responded promptly and managed to extinguish the fire, limiting its spread. Experts emphasize that electric scooters powered by lithium-ion batteries can become extremely dangerous if not used correctly, and a malfunction of a cell can trigger chain reactions, including fires or explosions. Authorities recommend that these devices should not be left unattended while charging, especially at night, and that only original chargers should be used to prevent such incidents.
The explosion in Bucharest is not an isolated case, and in recent years, several fires caused by electric scooters have been reported in Romania.
