Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara, criticized on Monday the decision of the Constitutional Court to validate an amendment proposed by PSD, which stipulates that all mayors declared in conflict of interest will lose their mandate, including those affected retroactively.

Fritz emphasized that if the integrity law comes into force in its current form, he will remain without a mandate within 30 days. He believes that this amendment constitutes a retroactive sanction and violates Article 15 of the Constitution, which states that the law applies only for the future.

The mayor was declared in conflict of interest by the High Court of Cassation and Justice after he approved a report to modify a Zonal Urban Plan related to a company of a local councilor who lent him money during the electoral campaign.

Fritz announced that he will contest the decision at the ECHR, stating that the parliamentary majority can arbitrarily invent penalties for the past.
