Doctor Dorel Săndesc, the manager of the County Hospital in Timișoara and vice president of the Romanian Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, was sentenced by the Timișoara Court to 1 year and 8 months of suspended prison for manslaughter, following a traffic accident in 2018.
A woman who was in the car he hit died 9 months after the accident, and Săndesc's lawyers argued that nosocomial infections from the hospital he now manages contributed to her death.
The court rejected the defense's arguments, emphasizing the failure to yield the right of way as the main cause of the accident.
In addition to the sentence, Săndesc must perform 60 days of community service and will be under supervision for two years. The doctor's insurance company was ordered to pay the hospital the amount of 825,650.04 lei for the medical services provided to the victim.
Dorel Săndesc acknowledged the accusation but stated that he is not the only guilty party, citing the excessive speed of the victim's driver and the lack of a seatbelt.
