A recent study, presented at the Cotroceni Palace, highlights the serious impact of disinformation on the prosperity and national security of Romania. The President emphasized that 1 in 6 influencers and more than 1 in 8 public sources constantly spread disinformation in the Romanian digital space, propagating false information with the intention to deceive. The study showed that on TikTok, 76% of the content viewed comes from just 10 accounts, while on Telegram, this percentage reaches 99%.
Disinformation theories include anti-Westernism, election cancellation, and fear of war. Disinformation cost Romania 1 billion euros last year, also affecting foreign companies. Civic initiatives have started pilot campaigns to combat disinformation, providing citizens with validated information. Researchers analyzed posts from five social networks, identifying nearly 1,600 accounts and 26,000 posts between March and May.
