The population of Romania is continuously decreasing. The number of births decreased in April 2026, while deaths increased, thus maintaining a negative natural growth.

The National Institute of Statistics (INS) reported a decrease in the number of births in April 2026, with 10,655 children born, down 0.3% compared to March 2026 and 726 fewer births compared to April 2025. At the same time, the number of deaths increased, with 19,413 deaths recorded, representing a 0.5% increase compared to April 2025, but a decrease of 6.5% compared to March 2026.

The natural increase was negative, -8,758, with deaths being 1.8 times higher than births. The majority of deaths were recorded among people over 80 years old (42%), while the fewest were among children aged 0-4 years (81 deaths). Compared to the previous year, the natural increase was negative both in April 2026 and in April 2025.

Additionally, there were 6,693 marriages and 2,194 divorces recorded in April 2026.
