Daniel Chițoiu was sentenced to 4 years in prison for a fatal accident in 2019, in which two people died.

In December 2019, Daniel Chițoiu caused a fatal accident in Argeș County, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding head-on with a car that had three people inside. The Pitești Court of Appeal increased the initial sentence from 3 years to 4 years in prison, after prosecutors began criminal proceedings in January 2020, shortly after the accident.

As a result of the impact, an 82-year-old man and his wife died, and another person was injured. Chițoiu refused to testify before investigators and denied that he had been on the phone at the time of the accident. Sent to trial in August 2020, the former minister is required to pay 800,000 lei in damages to the victims' heirs and will be banned from driving for 5 years after serving his sentence.
