The section for prosecutors of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) has given a favorable opinion, unanimously, to the proposal of the Minister of Justice to appoint Ioan-Viorel Cerbu as the chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA). At the same time, the verdict for Marius Voineag, the current head of DNA, who aspires to the position of deputy prosecutor general, is still pending. The current prosecutor general, Alex Florența, who is running to be deputy at DIICOT, is in the same situation.
The vote of the committee for Voineag and Florența was again tied at 3 votes for and 3 against. CSM decided to include the proposal for Marius Voineag, but also for Alex Florin Florența, who wishes to become deputy at DIICOT, on the agenda of a future meeting, both cases remaining blocked following the tie vote.
Cerbu is appreciated for his vast experience within DNA and for his ability to integrate modern methods in combating crime. CSM has given favorable opinions for other appointments but rejected the proposals for Cristina Chiriac and Gil Julien Grigore Iacobici.
We remind you that the CSM's opinion is consultative, and the final decision belongs to President Nicușor Dan.
The protests that took place in Romania after the Minister of Justice proposed the heads of the major prosecutor's offices also targeted the "Voineag-Florența group".
"During Voineag's mandates at DNA and Florența's at the General Prosecutor's Office, the activity of the prosecutor's offices has significantly decreased. The magistrate now proposed to lead DNA, Viorel Cerbu, is part of the close circle of Marius Voineag, for whom he was an advisor and then deputy. Cristina Chiriac, the head of DNA Iași, kept in a drawer for two years the recordings of the abuses committed by the bishop of Huși, Corneliu Bârlădeanu, against minors. Essentially, it would follow that in the position of Prosecutor General of Romania, there would be a prosecutor for whom the sexual abuse committed against children does not need to be investigated," says the Declic community.
