Director Cristian Mungiu states that Romanian society is caught between progressivism and traditionalism and is in an "absolute divide".

"Ten years ago and until today, things have changed a lot and now we are seen as a prosperous and more western country than someone who is always further east and poorer. The stores are full, our construction sites are filled with workers from Asia, and I have the feeling that we have not learned anything from the fact that we do not like how the Westerners look at us. I feel that we also look at these people as superficially and as superior as we are looked at and how we do not like how we are treated when we go elsewhere and perform these lowly jobs," Cristian Mungiu further stated.
