Electrocentrale Craiova, under the authority of the Ministry of Energy, is facing serious financial and operational problems, being in insolvency since 2022. Mayor Olguța Vasilescu stated that the city has been left without heating due to damages to the energy groups, caused by a lack of investment in repairs. Although the Ministry of Energy requested financial aid to cover the debts, Prime Minister Bolojan opposed the allocation of the necessary funds. The City Hall has begun steps to build its own power plant, purchasing land and submitting the necessary documentation. Union leader Ion Vîlceanu criticized the City Hall's intention to buy the assets of Electrocentrale, warning that this could leave 500 employees without social protection. Electrocentrale Craiova produces thermal energy for the city and for Ford Otosan, but is facing losses due to high costs of CO2 certificates. The Dolj Tribunal has accepted the insolvency request, and the next court date is set for March 2026.
