According to the BNR Report for 2025, counterfeit Romanian banknotes totaled 1,356 pieces, registering a significant decrease of 33.79% compared to the previous year. The banknote with the highest number of counterfeits was the 100 lei note, with 1,163 specimens, of which 708 were captured by the police before being put into circulation.

In contrast, the 20 lei, 5 lei, and 1 leu banknotes recorded no counterfeits. Of the 1,356 counterfeits, 647 were detected in circulation. Additionally, the report indicates a decrease in the number of counterfeits per 1 million authentic banknotes, reaching 0.63 pieces, compared to 0.97 pieces in 2024. These data suggest an improvement in the security of Romanian banknotes.
