Avram Iancu International Airport in Cluj-Napoca has installed 12 automated border control gates for passengers traveling to or arriving from countries outside the Schengen Area. The system is operational in the Departures Terminal and the Arrivals Terminal.
Six gates have been installed in the Departures Terminal for passengers from the European Union traveling to non-Schengen destinations. Another six are located in the Arrivals Terminal and are used by people arriving from countries outside the Schengen Area.
Automated Border Control (ABC) uses biometric verification and the secure reading of electronic travel documents. The procedures are carried out automatically under the supervision of the Border Police, and the system is intended to streamline checks and reduce waiting times.
The investment amounts to 12,084,739 lei, excluding VAT, and the gates were supplied by SITA.
Cluj Airport also has an ILS CAT III instrument landing system, which enables operations in conditions of very low visibility. Depending on the type of aircraft, the operator and the crew’s qualifications, it can limit flight cancellations and diversions during periods of dense fog.
In 2025, the airport recorded a traffic record: more than 3.5 million passengers, approximately 10% more than in the previous year.
