The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that EU Member States must recognize gender reassignment made in another Member State.

The decision was made in the case of a transgender person from Romania who changed her gender and surname in the UK before Brexit. The CJEU ruled that a Member State's refusal to recognize a gender reassignment obtained in another Member State contravenes EU law, regardless of Brexit. The decision comes in support of the LGBTQ+ community and underlines the importance of recognizing gender change at EU level.
