On Friday, the Timiș Tribunal handed down its sentence in the case of the murder committed at the beginning of the year in Cenei, where Mario Berinde, a 15-year-old boy, was killed and set on fire by three other children. The decision is not final and may be appealed to the Timișoara Court of Appeal.
One of the teenagers involved, also 15 years old, was sentenced to the educational measure of placement in a detention center for a period of 15 years for aggravated murder and desecration of a corpse. The period of detention and pretrial arrest, which began on January 21, 2026, will be deducted from the duration of the measure. The court extended his pretrial detention by another 60 days.
The second 15-year-old teenager was ordered to undergo the educational measure of daily supervision for six months for desecration of a corpse and aiding the perpetrator. He must attend classes and psychological counseling and comply with the ban on approaching the other defendants and the victim’s relatives.
The third child is not criminally liable because he was under 14 at the time of the events. The Timiș Tribunal awarded Mario Berinde’s relatives more than one million euros in moral damages. The sentence may be challenged on appeal.
