The Constitutional Court of Romania will resume deliberations on January 16 for the reform of judges' pensions.

The Constitutional Court of Romania announced that it will continue deliberations in the case of the objection of unconstitutionality of the Law on the reform of judges' pensions on January 16, 2026, due to lack of quorum. This is the third postponement of the decision. The judges proposed by the PSD did not attend the meeting, requesting an impact study that the president of the CCR, Simina Tănăsescu, deemed irrelevant. The draft law provides for raising the retirement age to 65 and limits the pension to 70% of the last net salary.

The Superior Council of Magistracy issued a negative opinion, and the judges believe that the law discriminates against magistrates and violates the independence of justice. The ICCJ referred the matter to the CCR, arguing that the law reduces service pensions and does not comply with international standards. Additionally, the explanatory memorandum of the project is considered unfounded and mentioned as a misleading public communication.
