Călin Georgescu cannot leave pre-trial detention immediately, although a Bucharest Tribunal judge ordered that the measure be replaced with house arrest. The decision is not final, and prosecutors may file an appeal with the Bucharest Court of Appeal within 48 hours of being notified.
Former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader explained that implementing house arrest depends on the resolution of the appeal. Until then, Georgescu remains “under the authority of the pre-trial detention warrant.” According to Toader, the court should hear the case promptly, which could take approximately five days, although the actual duration depends on the judicial procedure.
Toader noted that it is not ruled out that the case could be reviewed by the same judges who previously handled it. He also discussed the possibility of Georgescu communicating with his wife, Cristela Georgescu, if she does not have witness status. In that case, the two could speak at home.
House arrest requires Călin Georgescu to disclose how he earns his living and to provide investigators with information about his sources of income.
