A 31-year-old Bulgarian citizen was identified and detained after fatally hitting a pedestrian and fleeing the scene of the accident, which occurred on Friday in the town of Cetate, Dolj County. The victim, a 69-year-old man from Timiș County, died instantly in the impact.
The pedestrian was found on the road by several passers-by, who alerted the authorities. Emergency crews arriving at the scene could do nothing to save the victim, with medics confirming his death.
Dolj police began checks to identify the driver and the vehicle involved. Following cooperation with the Bulgarian authorities, investigators established the man’s identity. He subsequently reported to the Calafat Police headquarters, where he was detained for 24 hours.
The Bulgarian citizen is being investigated for involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident without the approval of the police authorities. He is due to be brought before the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Calafat District Court, with a proposal for pretrial detention.
