Bucharest residents could pay more for hot water and heating

The general mayor of Bucharest, Ciprian Ciucu, announced that there is a possibility of increasing the tariffs for heating and hot water this winter, due to the financial difficulties faced by Termoenergetica and the operation of the heating system at reduced capacity.

The current tariffs have not been adjusted since 2022, and Bucharest has some of the lowest prices in the country. The City Hall covers 60% of the actual cost of the gigacalorie, and the proposal for an increase comes as a result of recommendations from the specialized directorate and Termoenergetica. Before making an official proposal, Ciucu intends to discuss with the political groups in the General Council, as the increase requires the vote of the councilors.

Currently, the heating system operates at 60% capacity, and thousands of apartment buildings are facing a lack of hot water or insufficient supply. Any potential increase in tariffs could worsen the situation for Bucharest residents, who are already facing issues in service delivery. The final decision will be made by the General Council.
