Last Sunday, St. Elijah the Prophet's Orthodox Church in Damascus was the scene of a devastating attack that left 22 dead and 63 injured. The attacker entered the church during Mass and opened fire on worshippers, detonating the explosives. Patriarch Daniel condemned the act of violence, emphasizing the devastating impact on the Syrian Orthodox community. The Syrian Interior Ministry suspects the involvement of Islamic State, although responsibility has not been claimed. This is the first such attack in Syria in recent years.
