The Chamber of Deputies votes on restrictions for cars driven by beginner drivers

The Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body, is voting on a bill that could limit the cars driven by beginner drivers during the first two years after obtaining their license. The initiative seeks to establish a maximum ratio between engine power and the vehicle’s weight, rather than introduce a fixed list of prohibited models.

The proposed limit is 75 kilowatts per ton, equivalent to approximately 102 horsepower per ton. For a car weighing between 1.3 and 1.5 tons, the threshold would mean a power output of approximately 120–130 horsepower.

Cars exceeding the established ratio could not be driven by drivers during their first two years after obtaining their license. Models that could be affected, depending on their engine and exact weight, include the BMW 330, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C200.

By contrast, certain versions of the Dacia Logan could fall within the proposed limit. Verification would not be based solely on the car’s commercial name, but on the technical characteristics of each version, including engine power and vehicle weight. The restrictions would take effect only if the bill is adopted and promulgated.
