A 25-year-old police officer from Bechet shot himself in the head on Sunday evening, shortly after retrieving his gun from the Bechet Police station. The officer had returned after the end of his medical leave, and the weapon was handed to him by the colleague on duty. The young man then headed toward his car, where a gunshot was heard.
The police officer was taken to the Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital in extremely serious condition. According to hospital representatives, he arrived at 12:26 a.m., intubated and mechanically ventilated, and was subsequently transferred to the operating room.
The investigation ordered by the Dolj County Police Inspectorate leadership is examining whether the officers who handed him the weapon knew about his medical problems and any restrictions regarding the carrying and use of firearms. The officer had been hospitalized at the beginning of October and had undergone treatment for depression. After being discharged, he reportedly presented his superiors with medical documents that would have imposed restrictions. Prosecutors are to establish the route of the documents and whether procedures were breached. At his last psychological evaluation, in June of last year, the police officer had been declared fit.
