Avram Iancu, a librarian from Petroșani, achieved a remarkable performance, becoming on Monday the first Romanian to swim across the English Channel, in the breaststroke style. The crossing ended after 24 hours and 46 minutes, and the official time will be validated by race observers.
The start was given on Sunday near the town of Dover, and Iancu anticipated the difficulties encountered, mentioning physical pain and mental discomfort. The organizers appointed two observers to ensure compliance with the rules. Iancu swam without a wetsuit, marking also the completion of his 50th year.
He has an impressive track record, including previous crossings of the English Channel, the Danube, the Bristol Channel, and the Rhine River. His performances highlight his dedication and determination in open water swimming.
