The Romanian Customs Authority (AVR) initiated on Monday, April 6, 2026, a large-scale control operation on the main transport routes in the country, focused on the imports of perishable food products.

The action was prompted by risk analyses indicating a high potential for fraud in this sector. Customs inspectors aim to detect serious irregularities, such as discrepancies between the declared quantities of goods and those transported, undervaluation of goods to evade taxes, concealment of the true origin of products, and the risk of introducing unsafe food into the market. The operation is carried out in collaboration with the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) and involves mobile teams deployed at key transit points, such as Giurgiu and Calafat. The controls are strict, including physical checks of the goods and sampling. Goods will be sold only after confirming compliance with legal and food safety standards.
