The Romanian Banking Association (ARB) declared that credit institutions in Romania comply with national legislation regarding the establishment of the ROBOR index and that they conduct themselves in accordance with competition norms, in the context of the investigation by the Competition Council. This investigation examines a possible agreement among the 10 banks participating in the 'fixing' procedure.
The President of the Council, Bogdan Chirițoiu, emphasized that the investigation targets the behavior of the banks, not the regulatory framework. ARB highlighted that the National Bank of Romania (BNR) has the role of organizer and supervisor of the monetary market. Additionally, ARB warned that the accusations could affect financial stability and investor confidence.
The Governor of BNR, Mugur Isărescu, mentioned public confusion regarding the functioning of ROBOR. ARB reminded that similar investigations have taken place in the past, without identifying deficiencies of a competitive nature. The organization called for a thorough analysis based on evidence before drawing conclusions.
