The head of the National Meteorological Administration, Elena Mateescu, stated that the rains in the last few days in Bucharest are the most significant in over 50 years, with 113.6 l/m² recorded in just six days. The capital is very close to the absolute record from October 1972, of 143.3 l/m², and by 11:00 PM new precipitation is expected that could exceed this. Mateescu explained that the establishment of the red code for torrential rains was justified by the high values and the rapid evolution of the weather phenomena.
