The National Association for Soft Drinks (ANBR) has warned that the taxes imposed in recent years have led to a significant decrease in sales volumes and affect the competitiveness of producers in Romania. Since the increase of VAT to 19% in 2023 and the introduction of the excise tax on sugary drinks, the industry has felt considerable financial pressure. Taxes account for approximately 32% of the price of beverages, which has led to sales declines of up to 15%. ANBR calls for a constructive dialogue with the authorities to eliminate discriminatory tax measures and emphasizes that the industry is no longer competitive compared to other countries in the region. Additionally, legal options are being analyzed to contest the excise tax, deemed unfair. The industry seeks a fair approach and predictability in the tax regime to support investments and maintain jobs.
