ANAF sent 8,099 criminal referrals to the Police for non-payment of taxes and contributions in 2023, 41% more than in the whole of 2022.

In 2023, there were 1,756 criminal cases concerning non-payment of taxes and contributions. The police took action on these referrals, registering 661 criminal files as a result of referrals from the Ministry of Finance and 1,095 criminal files as a result of ex officio referrals. There were also 805 criminal files registered in the first quarter of 2024.
