AEP asks ANAF to recover over 14 million lei from the PNL, following the final loss of the lawsuit concerning the promotion of Nicolae Ciucă’s book

The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) has again asked the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) to recover 14,117,378.04 lei from the National Liberal Party. The money represents expenses for promoting the book by former Liberal leader Nicolae Ciucă, and the High Court of Cassation and Justice has definitively ruled that the amount must be returned to the state.

AEP President Adrian Țuțuianu said on Wednesday that the institution does not have the authority to enforce debts against political parties. Documents concerning sanctions and confiscations are sent to the tax administration, which can initiate the recovery procedure.

AEP renewed its request after the final resolution of the case in which the PNL challenged the electoral authority’s decision. Țuțuianu said the request to ANAF was sent the day after the ruling was issued and expressed hope that enforcement proceedings would begin in accordance with the law.

The head of the AEP warned that the PNL’s situation is not unique and that other parties could also end up owing substantial sums. To streamline procedures, the AEP and ANAF are due to sign a cooperation protocol next week.

PNL leader Ilie Bolojan previously acknowledged that the party had considerable debts at the end of 2024 and said that the party intends to pay the amount established by the court as well.
