The Labour government led by Keir Starmer has announced its intention to introduce entry fees for foreign tourists at national galleries and museums, according to The Guardian. This measure would mark a significant change, considering that the principle of free admission has been in place for over 25 years, contributing to attracting tourists across the country.

Budget cuts have generated intense discussions in the Palace of Westminster, and the revenue generated from ticket sales could support arts funding, an idea supported by Arts Council England. A study shows that nearly three-quarters of Britons would agree to impose a fee on foreign visitors, without affecting the free admission for British citizens.

Critics like Alison Cole believe that there are more effective alternatives for preserving museums, such as introducing hotel taxes. This proposal comes in the context of recent price increases in cultural institutions in France, which aim to reinvest profits into the cultural sector.
