The feature film 'Sentimental Value', directed by Joachim Trier, was the big winner of the 38th EFA gala, winning six awards, including 'best European film'. The film, which explores the complicated relationship between sisters Nora and Agnes and their father, Gustav, was praised for its direction, screenplay, and performances, with Stellan Skarsgard and Renate Reinsve in the lead roles. Joachim Trier emphasized the importance of cinema in promoting empathy in his acceptance speech. The ceremony was opened by Jafar Panahi, who addressed themes of oppression and artistic responsibility. Other notable awards were given to Liv Ullmann for her lifetime achievement and Alice Rohrwacher for excellence in cinematography. The gala took place in Berlin, marking a change of date compared to previous editions, to provide better visibility for European cinema.
