American filmmaker George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars series, will be awarded the honorary Palme d'Or trophy at the Cannes Film Festival.

George Lucas, 79, will receive the award at the closing ceremony of the 77th festival. The organizers compared Lucas to J.R.R. Tolkien, recalling the impact of the "Star Wars" series on cinema. This year's edition of the festival will include screenings of big-name films such as "Horizon, An American Saga" starring Kevin Costner.
