During the match of the first round at the Australian Open, Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez showed compassion after a ball girl fell on the court. The incident occurred while Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova was serving, and the ball girl needed assistance. Sonmez immediately ran to her, helping her to get to the edge of the court, where she received medical attention. The match was suspended for six minutes but continued after the girl was helped to leave the court. Sonmez, ranked 112th in the world, won the match against Alexandrova, the 11th seed, with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, marking the biggest victory of her career and qualifying for the second round at Melbourne Park for the first time.
