UEFA and FIFA have different opinions regarding the sanctioning of players who cover their mouths during matches. Although FIFA has introduced a rule that mandates the expulsion of players for this gesture, UEFA has decided not to apply it in its competitions, such as the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. This controversy began during the Benfica - Real Madrid match when Gianluca Prestianni was accused of racist behavior.
According to UEFA, referees are required to assess situations individually, and any "attempt to conceal communication that constitutes unsportsmanlike behavior" could be sanctioned with a warning or expulsion, depending on the referee's interpretation. UEFA will still implement some of the new football rules, including the use of VAR for awarding a corner or a goal kick.
