The local authorities in Rio de Janeiro have announced their intention to sell the Maracana stadium, a decision that has sparked a national debate. This measure is part of a strategy to reduce the state's debt, which amounts to 1.89 billion euros and must be paid by 2026, according to the federal economic restructuring program.
The sale of the stadium could bring in over 320 million euros, however, the announcement has caused outrage among Brazilians, who consider Maracana a historic and cultural symbol. The stadium became famous after hosting the World Cup final in 1950, when it recorded the highest number of spectators in history, with 173,850 fans present at the Brazil-Uruguay match.
