Senegal, which won the controversial title of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January against Morocco, paraded with the trophy before a friendly match against Peru at the Stade de France in Paris. The team captain, Kalidou Coulibaly, and his teammates entered the field with the trophy, after a concert by Senegalese superstar Youssou Ndour. A few hours earlier, Morocco declared the trophy case closed, after the African Football Confederation (CAF) decided to annul Senegal's 1-0 victory in the final, due to protests from Senegalese players over a penalty awarded to Morocco. CAF awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory and the title. Senegal announced that it would appeal to CAF and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a process that could take a year. The Senegalese government has called for an independent international investigation into CAF's decision, accusing corruption. The final was marked by protests from Senegalese players, who left the field during the match but returned after a 14-minute delay, only to see the missed penalty.
