Several hours before the quarter-final match of the World Cup, the French Minister of Sports, Marina Ferrari, commented on the racist insults directed at Kylian Mbappé by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla. The latter used offensive language on social media, sparking global outrage.
The Paraguayan government reacted, offering apologies and stating that the remarks do not reflect national values. Ferrari emphasized that such discourse is unacceptable from a political figure and denounced the statements as abject.
Following a complaint from the French Football Federation, an investigation was opened in Paris for public insult and incitement to hatred. Mbappé responded, criticizing the senator's behavior and highlighting that such actions affect Paraguay's image on the international stage.
