Neymar was shown a straight red card in the match between Santos and Bahia, which ended 1-1 in the 32nd round of the Brazilian championship, following a clash that erupted before the second half. Santos’ No. 10 argued with Rodrigo Nestor, and the referee consulted VAR footage after the opponent asked him to apply the “Vinicius rule.”
The referee showed him a red card, at which point Neymar lost his temper. The footballer initially refused to leave the pitch, went after Nestor and was stopped by several players. During the incident, he struck an opponent in the neck area.
The controversy was not limited to the clash with Nestor. In the first half, Neymar allegedly also pushed Rogerio Ceni, Bahia’s coach, after he protested following a foul committed by a Santos player.
After being sent off, Santos’ captain headed toward the dressing rooms but stopped to explain his version of the incidents to some people who were filming him. With six rounds remaining, Santos are eighth with 46 points, while Bahia are seventh, four points ahead.
