Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, aged 40, has confirmed that he has ended his career with the German national team following the team's elimination in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after a defeat on penalties against Paraguay. When asked by ARD if the match against Paraguay was his last, Neuer responded affirmatively, emphasizing that it is "extremely bitter" to end this way.
World champion in 2014, Neuer returned to the national team for this tournament, having 128 caps in his career. Although he was a starter under coach Julian Nagelsmann, he conceded at least one goal in every match played at the 2026 World Cup. Although he is retiring from the national team, Neuer still has one year left on his contract with Bayern Munich.
