Ion Tiriac, former great tennis player and Romanian billionaire, vehemently criticized David Haggerty, the president of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), for his controversial decisions, especially after the partnership between ITF and Kosmos, which led to the change in the format of the Davis Cup.
Tiriac stated that Haggerty has "sold" the competition and turned it into a shadow of what it was, claiming that he predicted its bankruptcy within three years. At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Haggerty reacted by banning Tiriac from attending tennis matches. Tiriac also spoke about the sale of the Madrid tournament, which his daughter, Ioana, advised him not to sell, but which was sold in 2021 for 360 million euros. Tiriac's criticisms highlight the tensions in the world of tennis and the impact of leadership decisions on traditional competitions.
