Gianluca Prestianni, the extreme Argentine player of the Benfica team, faces the risk of missing the first matches of the Argentine national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after FIFA extended his suspension of six matches worldwide. This sanction was initially imposed by UEFA, following allegations that Prestianni insulted Vinicius Jr. during a Champions League playoff match in February.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to extend this suspension under Article 70 of the Disciplinary Code, which means that Prestianni will miss the first two matches of Argentina at the World Cup, if selected. The suspension applies to official international matches and club competitions under UEFA, but does not affect friendly matches or those in national leagues.
