Gael Monfils is officially considered retired from tennis as of October 5, according to the list published by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). However, the Frenchman made no public announcement, and his retirement was noticed after French journalists observed his name appearing on the list of players who are no longer active.
Monfils had previously announced that 2026 would be his final year on the ATP Tour and intended to end his career after participating in the tournaments in Lyon, Vienna, and Paris. However, he can no longer participate in ATP competitions after being placed by the ITIA on the list of retired athletes.
The international body confirmed the information to L’Équipe through its communications officer, Adrian Bassett. The ITIA monitors active players and manages procedures concerning their status, including in the context of anti-doping rules and efforts to combat match-fixing.
Monfils’s last match was played on September 3, in the second round of the US Open, where the Frenchman was defeated by American Learner Tien. This season, Alexandra Dulgheru was also included on the same list, officially retired by the ITIA as of June 29, although she had not played since 2021. In certain cases, players listed as retired have subsequently requested a return to the ranks of active athletes.
