Diribe Welteji, world runner-up in the 1,500 m, has been provisionally suspended at the request of the World Athletics anti-doping unit due to an alleged violation of anti-doping rules. Although she was acquitted by the anti-doping authority in Ethiopia, the Athletics Integrity Unit decided to appeal, requesting the suspension until the case is adjudicated. Welteji has not competed since July, holding a personal record of 3 minutes 51 seconds 44, and will miss the competition in Tokyo.
