The velodrome in Rio de Janeiro was engulfed by a violent fire.

On Wednesday, a huge fire broke out at the velodrome in the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro, causing significant damage but no casualties, according to firefighters' statements. Approximately 80 firefighters and 20 fire trucks were mobilized to extinguish the fire, which affected both the interior and exterior of the building. The velodrome, built for the 2016 Olympic Games, is managed by municipal authorities and houses the Olympic Museum, which features historical exhibits, including the Olympic torch and medals.

The city's mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, stated that the velodrome's track did not suffer damage but will require cleaning and maintenance before it can be reopened. Lieutenant Colonel Fabio Contreiras emphasized the firefighters' efforts to protect the museum's exhibits. The velodrome's roof has been affected by fires in the past, in 2017, due to the falling of lanterns.
