Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, suggested lifting the suspension of Russia from international competitions, provoking strong reactions from Ukrainian officials, who called his statement "irresponsible." Russia has been excluded from international competitions since February 2022, at the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

Infantino stated that the exclusion has not brought benefits and that it would be good for young Russians to play football in Europe. The Kremlin welcomed these comments, while Ukrainian officials, such as Sports Minister Matvi Bidnii and the director of Shakhtar Donetsk, Serhi Palkin, criticized Infantino's position, highlighting the suffering caused by the war.

Palkin urged Infantino to visit Ukraine to understand the reality of the conflict, emphasizing the devastating impact of the war on the lives of players and communities. He warned that support for Russia's return would have serious political and moral implications.
