Sorana Cîrstea (41 WTA) had a conflict with Naomi Osaka (17 WTA) during the second round match at the Australian Open, which the Romanian lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Cîrstea was disturbed by Osaka's shouting, especially in the deciding set, when she complained to the chair umpire about the Japanese player's unsportsmanlike behavior.

Sorana asked if Osaka was allowed to shout "come on" between her serves, but the official did not intervene, which heightened the Romanian's nerves. After the match, at the net greeting, the two had a tense exchange, Cîrstea accusing Osaka of a lack of fair play. Osaka, affected by the incident, stated that she felt bad that Sorana got upset and that she could have communicated her dissatisfaction.
